Platform feeders, where bird seed is offered on a tray, are most likely to attract the largest birds in the neighborhood.  Platform feeders typically have a ledge that prevents seeds from falling off and some are covered to reduce the impact of bad weather.  Platform feeders are typically constructed of wood or plastic. 

When selecting a platform feeder, consider these features: feeders with a large base allow the largest of birds to perch.  Platform feeders that are covered are protected from the elements.  Feeders that can be pole-mounted rather than hung from a shepherd’s hook might be less susceptible to wind gusts that can blow the bird seed away.
