Hopper feeders are box-like storage compartments that look like small houses. The roof of the hopper feeder keeps bird seed dry and usually lifts up for refilling seed. They are typically made of a combination of wood, metal, and/or plastic. Hopper feeders attract birds that would not be able to perch on a tube feeder because of their size. Hopper feeders usually hold larger quantities of seed than tube feeders.
When selecting a hopper feeder, ask these questions: Will the feeder be able to dispense a wide variety of bird seeds? How large is the landing area – Will it allow large birds to perch? Can birds perch on four sides of the feeder or only two?
