Contact: Stacey Shonkwiler Decatur, IL Beginning spring 2009, the National Bird-Feeding Society will once again serve the bird feeding public. Established in 1989, the NBFS helps make the backyard bird feeding and watching hobby better - for people and wild birds. The NBFS accomplishes its mission by connecting hobbyists with education and research about backyard bird feeding. After 15 years of service to the public, the NBFS has entrusted the Wild Bird Centers of America, Inc. to be the exclusive sponsor of the NBFS and continue its mission. “The Wild Bird Centers of America is committed to the NBFS mission to make the latest backyard bird feeding information and resources available to the public. Our support begins with a new website and decision to host the NBFS at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois where its staff and students bring new perspectives and talents to the organization. WBCA is honored to support the NBFS and its goals” said George Petrides, Sr., Founder and Chairman of WBCA, headquartered near Washington, D.C. The new NBFS website serves as a comprehensive resource for people who feed wild birds and to help them connect to the natural world through backyard bird feeding. On the website, individuals can learn more about the seed and feeder preferences of wild birds as well as view the most current news and developments in backyard bird feeding. The NBFS sponsors “National Bird-Feeding Month” each February to publicize the hobby. It also supports research about backyard birds. Stacey Shonkwiler, Manager of the NBFS and the Ornithological Research Lab at Millikin University, stated “The National Bird-Feeding Society is a resource that backyard birders of all ages can use to learn more about the birds in their backyard and how to attract them. Ultimately, the goal of the NBFS is to bring some of nature’s most beautiful sights and sounds just outside your window.” A unique aspect of the NBFS is that day-to-day operations of the organization are coordinated by the students and staff of Millikin University. “Millikin University is delighted to be a vital part of the National Bird-Feeding Society” said Dr. David J. Horn, Associate Professor of Biology at Millikin and Director of the NBFS. “Students will have the opportunity to help millions of people gain a greater connection to the natural world, while providing students with real-world experience.” For more information about attracting birds to your backyard, visit the National Bird-Feeding Society website at www.nbfs.org.
